Edinburgh is the nearest major airport, 50 miles south — about 1 hour 15 minutes by car, or the frequent buses and trains to Leuchars station (10 minutes from St Andrews) via Edinburgh. Rental cars, taxis, and Open Championship shuttles cover the route; during the 2027 Open, book parking and transfers months ahead.
St Andrews is a mile across — the Old Course, the town center, the ruins, and both beaches all walk from any hotel. The pilgrim's approach, walking the Links to the 1st tee at dawn, is the essential first experience.
Leuchars station, 4 miles away, connects to Edinburgh (1 hour) and Dundee (10 minutes) — a connecting bus or taxi covers the final leg. The Open runs special shuttle buses from Leuchars and park-and-rides for championship week.
The Old Course's daily ballot for public tee times closes 48 hours ahead — apply through the Links Trust's official site, and have the New and Jubilee courses as backups. Championship week obviously suspends play.
Guesthouses and small hotels in the medieval core put the Old Course's 1st tee, the R&A clubhouse, and the fish-and-chip institution of the town all within a five-minute walk. Book 12+ months out for Open Championship years.

Drive or bus the Fife coast: the fishing villages of the East Neuk — Crail, Anstruther (and its famous fish bar), Pittenweem — then back for a final stroll of the links and a farewell dinner on North Street.
